10 Horror Movies That Got Too Silly To Be Scary

1. The Wicker Man (2006)

Sony PicturesSony PicturesWhere to start with this one... Neil LaBute's 2006 remake of British horror The Wicker Man is dominated by one of the biggest screen presences in cinema: Nicolas Cage in full-on crazy mode. It is seen by many people as the perfect example of a film that's so bad it's good and is now a cult classic in the same vein as other awful films such as Troll 2 and The Room. Cage's performance is utterly bizarre. Even outside of the now legendary sacrifice scene ("not the bees... they're in my eyes" etc), every movement and line of dialogue is turned up to eleven. It's a performance completely free of control, subtlety or sanity. Only in The Wicker Man will you see a man punch a woman in a bear suit. Seriously. There must have been something in the water during the creative process for this film. Neither Cage, nor LaBute, seems to have any grip on reality or notion of how a horror film should be made. It's difficult to conceive of anyone ever thinking that this was going to be something worthwhile. There's silliness... and then there's The Wicker Man. Cage himself has acknowledged in interviews that the movie is "absurd". That's probably the understatement of the century. Do you agree with the films on this list? Are there any other horror films that you think are ruined by their unnecessary silliness. Let us know in the comments section.
