10 Horror Movies Hiding In Plain Sight

9. Southern Comfort

Walter Hill’s underrated survival movie follows a group of National Guardsmen conducting a practice drill in a Louisianan bayou. Somewhere along the way, they piss off a bunch of rednecks, and proceed to be hunted down like animals. Southern hospitality indeed.

In Southern Comfort the fear comes from never knowing when the next death is going to be. Will someone step on a random booby-trap? Or will a soldier go mad and start team-killing? Hill keeps the viewer in a constant state of suspense. There are long stretches where nothing much happens, but don’t be fooled, that’s only to put you off guard. Death will come, and it will come hard.

While it takes place in America, the environment feels almost alien. It’s like a Vietnam War film only without the Vietnam part. The horror of war never hit so close to home.
