10 Horror Movies Hiding In Plain Sight

Danny Boyle’s career is a mix of critically acclaimed darlings and overlooked gems. Among those, Sunshine stands as one of his absolute best. Equal parts cerebral and terrifying, it makes for a modern sci-fi classic.

A team of scientists are sent on a mission to reboot a dying sun before the lights go out for good. When everything that can go wrong does, they're forced to think fast or the human race will go extinct. No pressure.

While it turns into a slasher during its third act, the horror hits far earlier. The sun, that which is supposed to give life, burns bright with death. Its heat is almost palpable as it oppresses the crew of the Icarus II. Boyle reminds us that when it comes right down to it, the sun is nothing more than one giant ball of fiery doom.

There’s also a slight sense of cosmic horror, but not in the traditional way. Rather than some sort of evil godlike entity, the crew are faced with the overwhelming hostility of space. It truly feels like a place humans are not meant to be, even if our very survival depends on it.
