10 Horror Movies Hiding In Plain Sight

6. Killer Joe

Helmed by The Exorcist director William Friedkin, this Southern Gothic tale is one for the ages. Its tagline, “A totally twisted, deep-fried, Texas, redneck, trailer park murder story” is both a mouthful and an understatement.

Matthew McConaughey plays the titular Killer Joe, a corrupt cop moonlighting as a killer for hire. A young man in serious debt to some seriously bad guys requests his service to kill his mother so he can collect the life insurance. Unfortunately for him, he doesn’t have the cash required, but Joe is willing to make a compromise taking his little sister as collateral until he can cough up the dough.

McConaughey’s performance as Joe is so unhinged it borders on feral. You’re never sure what he’s going to do next. He’s violent one minute, sweet talking the next, and sometimes both at once. Joe is an unstable madman who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, whether it be the cash or a sickening relationship with the sister who has basically the mind of a child.

Also, this movie will change the way you look at chicken legs forever.
