10 Horror Movies Ruined By ONE Thing
5. Poor Marketing - Jennifer's Body
Jennifer's Body may not be perfect, but it is a memorable and well-crafted horror-comedy with a surging, righteously angry feminist undercurrent, yet potential viewers would barely know it by the movie's widely criticised marketing campaign.
Given that star Megan Fox was at the height of her fame at the time - courtesy of the Transformers franchise - the studio decided to center their marketing almost entirely around her sex appeal, effectively targeting horny teenage boys above all others. And so, it was little surprise when two things happened: said teenage boys got a much weirder, less-sexy film than they were expecting, and the women who might actually connect with the film's feminist messaging stayed home because the trailers gave little indication of it.
In light of the #MeToo movement, Jennifer's Body has enjoyed something of a critical evaluation in recent years, with both director Karyn Kusama and co-star Amanda Seyfried publicly condemning the marketing for dooming the picture upon original release. But if Fox - the studio, not the actress - didn't try and sell the movie so cynically upfront, it might've had a very different shelf life over the last 15 years.
