10 Horror Movies Set In Only One Location

7. Misery

Another appearance for horror hero Stephen King, this gripping James Caan-starring drama sees its protagonist struggle with the demands of his career as a bestselling novelist whilst juggling a substance abuse problem and cripplingly oversized ego.

Well, that’s what the film is about in metaphorical terms, at least.

But as Garth Marenghi informed us all writers who use subtext are mere cowards, and on the face of it this is a brutally effective single-location psychological horror from, er, When Harry Met Sally helmer Rob Reiner.

Anchored by a turn from Kathy Bates which ranks amongst the best performances of the decade, Misery sees Caan’s badly injured author saved from a wreck by his “number one fan” Annie Wilkes, an obsessive stalker who he soon learns harbours a dark past. The film’s story is simple and spare, and the set up revolves around the alternately sweet and terrifyingly tense interplay between Caan and his increasingly unhinged captor. Like so many bottle episode horrors this one relies on its pair of performers for its success, and benefits from both a typically charismatic, vulnerable performance from Caan and a mesmerizing, magnetic all-time classic turn from Bates.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
