10 Horror Movies So Sad You Can Only Watch Them Once
6. The Woman In Black
Because The Woman in Black starts with three young girls taking their lives, you instantly know you are in for a tough ride. Sadly, this adaption of Susan Hill's novel maintains that level of horror throughout.
After that haunting opening, we're introduced to young widower, Arthur Kipps, who must attend to business in Crythin Gifford. To his dismay, he discovers the locals are being terrorised by the ghost of Jennet Humfrye, who was scorned by them in her past life.
It's difficult to watch The Woman In Black, because we can see every character has suffered tremendous loss. Arthur's wife died giving birth to Joseph. Jennet's ghost compels the children of Crythin Gifford to kill themselves. A girl vomits blood on Arthur before dying in his arms, almost immediately after he arrives in town. Arthur's only companion, Samuel, lost his son, which drove his wife mad.
Despite being surrounded with unbearable sorrow, Arthur believes he can make things right. After locating the body of Jennet's son, Arthur has them buried together, assuming this kind act will appease the vengeful spirit.
But as Arthur and his four-year-old son, Joseph, wait at the train station, the ghost lures the boy onto the tracks. Arthur runs towards Joseph in an attempt to save him, but fails, resulting in their deaths.
It's the most heartbreaking ending possible, since Arthur had everything taken away from him, including his life, because he tried to help this malevolent spectre find peace.
