Funny Games begins with the Schober family, Anna, Georg, and Georg Jr, making their way to their holiday cabin. Soon after, two strange men, Paul and Peter, enter the Schober cabin, and begin imposing on Anna. When Georg orders them to leave, Peter breaks his leg before forcing them into the living room. Realising they are at their "guests" mercy, the Schobers are forced to do as they ask.

Even though Funny Games is a great watch, it's not an enjoyable one. This insidious duo kill a dog, reduce Georg to a cripple, sexually assault and humiliate Anna, before killing the entire family.

But that's not all. The film's most iconic moment is when Anna successfully grabs her tormentor's shotgun, blasting Peter to death. At first, it looks like the family might get out of this situation alive.

Suddenly, Paul uses the TV remote to rewind the scene and grab the gun before Anna does. Although this is an awesome example of meta being done right, it proves the Schobers have NO chance of survival, since the psychopathic pair control the narrative. When you realise the family were never getting out alive, it's hard to find a reason to watch Funny Games again.
