8. The Rite

Another supernatural horror to come from Hollywood that parallels reality a little too closely, The Rite is loosely adapted from Matt Baglio’s novel The Rite: The Making Of A Modern Exorcist – which is itself based on the alleged first-hand account of Father Gary Thomas. The film chronicles sceptical priest Michael Kovak’s (Colin O’Donoghue) time spent as an exorcist-in-training in Rome under the guidance of veteran clergyman Father Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins).

Though the film was met by scathing reviews from critics and general audiences who, despite applauding Hopkins' performance, took aim at a lacklustre pace and bland horror elements, Mikael Hafstrom’s film was nevertheless praised by the Catholic Church and Thomas himself for its depiction of faith and exorcisms. To add further authenticity to the film’s events, Thomas also acted as a consultant on the film where he helped the cast and producers make the exorcism sequences as accurate as possible in spite of admitting the film was a very loose version of his story.

Thanks to Hopkins' dedicated performance, the climactic possession scene makes for some frightening viewing. And if you believe Thomas’s account to be true, then The Rite is sure to be even scarier.
