Hereditary opens with Annie dealing with the recent death of her mentally ill mother, Ellen. While she's still processing her grief, her teenage daughter, Charlie, is killed in a freak accident, leaving Annie inconsolable.

When she bumps into a medium called Joanie, Annie hopes she this woman's skills to find peace. However, Anne discovers Joanie was friends with Ellen when she investigates her home. Not only that, the pair worshipped a demon called Paimon, who Joanie intends to bring to Earth by using Annie's son, Peter as a vessel.

Although Annie knew Ellen had secrets, she never suspected her mother was a disciple of the dark arts. But when you rewatch Hereditary, you can tell Ellen and Joanie were up to no good.

When Annie mentions her brother's suicide, she says Ellen was "putting people inside him". Although Annie assumed her brother was schizophrenic, it's clear Ellen was trying to use her son's body as a vessel for Paimon. The pole that kills Charlie has the Paimon logo on it, proving her death was orchestrated by Ellen's demonic cult. Charlie's diorama depicts a crowned pigeon being worshipped by headless figures, which lays out the movie's ending.

On a first viewing, it feels like nobody could've seen the twist coming. But when you give Hereditary another shot, what's really going on seems unmistakably clear.
