10 Horror Movies That Break The Genre

6. Stoker

Mulholland Drive
Fox Searchlight

Legendary South Korean director Park Chan-Wook created something special in his 2013 effort, Stoker.

The film is complex, constantly shifting our perspectives and sympathies as it centres on the Stoker family - consisting of young woman who has just turned 18, India (Mia Wasikowska), India's bitter mother, Evelyn (Nicole Kidman) and Charlie (Matthew Goode), a mysterious man who arrives on the scene, claiming to be the brother of India's recently deceased father.

The film, like a lot of Chan-wook's works, mashes and blends genres in a very unique way. It is simultaneously an affectionate callback to the classic Hitchcock thrillers - often compared to Shadow of a Doubt - and old-fashioned mysteries and film noirs, but also a brooding gothic tale and a very dark comedy.

With some unexpected violence, and a central trio of characters that often take unexpected turns in personality, Stoker is a surprising, shocking and often quite scary experience.

Cameron Mcmurdie hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
