10 Horror Movies That Break The Genre
5. Annihilation
Alex Garland followed up the 2015 modern classic, Ex Machina, with another great science fiction fable in Annihilation. One of the first films to be broadcast straight to Netflix, it has an all-star cast, consisting of Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriquez, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
It centres on a group of scientists, headed by Lena (Portman), who enter “The Shimmer”, a strange and ever-expanding area that was created when an alien meteor hit the Earth. Soon, Lena and her team are overwhelmed by The Shimmer’s inhabitants, including disturbing transforming plants and animals that threaten both their lives and their very sense of self.
The film draws you in thinking it will be a thrilling sci-fi adventure, however, it's actually a disturbing horror tale with a lot of gruesome but beautiful imagery. The closest comparison would be a modern version of the 80s sci-fi horror, The Thing.
In particular, a really terrifying sequence is where the group are attacked by a mutant bear. An underrated sci-fi horror, this is definitely worth a watch.
