10 Horror Movies That Changed The Industry Forever
5. Sixth Sense (1999)
The 1990's were an incredible decade for movies that deliberately sought to shock audiences with their surprise endings. Seven, The Shawshank Redemption, The Usual Suspects, Fight Club... the list goes on, but by 1999, one particular movie blew all the others out of the water. Anyone who claims that they predicted the twist at the end of M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense is either a telepathic, fortune telling genius or is just plain lying to you. The final reveal takes everything you thought you knew about the movie and flips it on its head. What didn't make sense prior to that moment suddenly fits together perfectly in a way that left the audience reeling from shock, but still ultimately satisfied. Since The Sixth Sense, other movies have tried to match the surprise factor of its final scene, including subsequent films made by Shyamalan himself, but audiences have now become jaded, actively seeking out clues so that they can predict twist endings before they arrive. While cinema will always hold the power to shock and surprise, audiences will never be as naive again as they were back in the 1990's. Damn you The Sixth Sense!
