10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Remake (And Why)

7. Re-Animator

This is likely not a popular opinion, but Re-Animator is a film of two minds. Based extremely loosely on an H.P. Lovecraft story, Re-Animator orbits around Jeffery Combs and his spellbinding performance as Herbert West, the titular Re-Animator.

West is obsessed with the concept of bringing the dead back to life through scientific means, and lacks any sort of morality to prevent him from accomplishing his goals, instead being opposed by fellow medical student Dan Cain. West's obsession, however, cannot be satiated, and his psychotic drive eventually blurs the boundaries between life and death.

Man's hubris is a tale as old as time, and so this film wouldn't be exploring any new grounds. However, a thematic shift could make for a significantly different take on Lovecraft's tale. Re-Animator, likely to its benefit, did not take itself too seriously, as several infamous scenes (the cat, the decapitated head), illustrate. However, it wouldn't take much effort to turn this film into a much darker tale, one that embraces the seriousness and the grave consequences of West's manipulations of forces he is helpless to control, but is utterly compelled to attempt.

Finding the right actor to balance this obsessive nature, moral void, and dark charisma would be no easy feat, but taking this classic horror scientist and morphing him from meek but determined to an absolute force of nature on screen could be completely captivating.
