10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Remake (And Why)

6. Pumpkinhead

Sam Neill Event Horizon 2
United Artists

The concept behind Pumpkinhead is a simple, but effective one. Partying teenagers lose control, resulting in the accidental death of a farmer's son. Grief stricken, he invokes powers he does not wholly understand: an otherworldly punisher, the Pumpkinhead. It then proceeds to unleash the rapidly dwindling fury of a broken man upon those that wrong him.

One of the biggest gripes against Pumpkinhead is the design. Created by one of the titans of horror, Stan Winston, the Pumpkinhead possesses more than a passing resemblance to H.R. Geiger's far more iconic xenomorph. Granted, the more humanized faith can convey some emotions, but Pumpkinhead never really seemed particularly varied in what it chose to convey, outside of bloody vengeance and rage.

A re-vamped Pumpkinhead would give modern-day effects gurus the chance to reconstruct this monster into something else all together. A new design could give way to new skillsets and, therefore, varied and creative kills throughout the film.

As for the plot, the film could take a more nuanced approach to the five stages of grief, with a compelling lead slowly coming to the realization that what he initially wanted isn't the right thing to do, and what lengths he would go to in order to set things right. Pumpkinhead has the potential to be a character study of mourning that its source material never quite achieved.
