9. The Mexican Border Wall - Monsters

Garth Edwards' ingenious low-budget creature feature Monsters depicts the fallout of a NASA probe crashing in Mexico, causing tentacled alien lifeforms to spread around the U.S.-Mexico border.

This leads to the northern half of Mexico being quarantined, and a gigantic border wall being constructed to protect the U.S. from any "alien" interlopers.

While it's clear that Edwards was passing a not-so-subtle social commentary on how America regards Mexican immigrants as monstrous "others," that wall sort-of became a reality in 2018, when President Donald Trump began constructing his long-promised border wall to keep illegal immigrants out of the U.S.

Soon after Trump announced his plans comparisons were made to Edwards' film, and though the wall's half-finished construction was halted when Joe Biden took office at the start of the year, there have been whispers that construction may in fact resume under Biden's administration.
