Make no mistake, The Terminator is a horror movie and one of the most terrifying ever made, as Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) is pursued by a seemingly unstoppable cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent from the future to kill her, nullify her future son's existence, and effectively cause the extinction of the human race.

But the film foretold horrors to come in one major way during its haunting flash-forward to the future war - the use of unmanned drones in warfare.

During the war, we see resistance soldiers being pursued by a Hunter Killer - a drone powered by Skynet's A.I. for the purpose of scouting and killing the enemy.

Though unmanned drones were absolutely a thing at the time of The Terminator's release, they weren't put to industrious use on the battlefield until the Gulf War in 1991, where they were largely used for surveillance, and then for more direct combat during America's 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Over the last 20 years there have been continued debates about the ethics of using drones in warfare, for while the majority of them still have some form of remote human input, with the massive recent improvements in A.I. machine learning, the future seems set to remove humans from pulling the trigger altogether.
