10 Horror Movies That Embarrassed Other Movies Released At The Same Time
4. Eden Lake EMBARRASSED The Last House On The Left
If ever there was a film that didn't need to be remade, it was The Last House on the Left. But remake it they did. The lesser-known Dennis Iliadis led the charge with a cadre of TV stars at his back, including Monica Potter and Garret Dillahunt, delivering an ever so slightly more tasteful film than Wes Craven's 1972 original, but one whose drama still turned on the lakeside beating, rape and murder of two young women.
Released six months prior, in the latter half of 2008, James Watkins' Eden Lake offered a similar setup -- couple face extreme violence by a lake deep in the woods, accompanied by the threat and implication of sexual assault. But, while Iliadis claimed to want to make his film more than the sexual violence of Craven's original, Watkins' feature is the only one of the pair which actually manages any depth, incorporating some potent social commentary and addressing an unspoken fear that adults of every era have had to contend with: antisocial teenagers.
Once again, in a showdown between the British indie horror and the American-made big budget bonanza, nuance and an Anglo accent win out. Eden Lake makes Last House look like the shameless neo-torture porn flick that it is, robbing it of any baseless claims to nuance. How embarrassing.
