10 Horror Movies That Ended Too Soon
7. The Devil Inside
Just like Quarantine, The Devil Inside attempts to make its plot seem more real by poorly aping techniques pioneered by The Blair Witch Project. But it doesn't invest enough time in its plot or characters beforehand to make the ambiguous ending pack the necessary punch.
The story chronicles the aftermath of Maria Rossi's murder of three people during her own exorcism. She's committed to an asylum in Rome, and two decades later her daughter Isabella tracks her down while filming a documentary all about the reality of exorcisms.
The movie is an unremarkable affair, with no real twists or turns as main characters get possessed and are attacked by demons throughout. It gets insulting, however, when the movie ends with two of Isabella's friends, Ben and Michael, driving to help her get an exorcism after she becomes possessed.
Here, Isabella promptly possesses Ben and causes him to crash the car, killing him and Michael in the most abrupt fashion possible. The film then cuts to a title card encouraging viewers to visit a web address to find out more.
Considering that the flick is only eighty-three minutes long, it really does feel like the filmmakers just couldn't be bothered to write a proper ending and decided to substitute it with this half-baked attempt to make the events on screen seem real. Needless to say, the preceding events feel even more 2-D once the credits start rolling.
