10 Horror Movies That Ended Too Soon
3. Rings
The amount of really good horror movie sequels can probably be counted on one hand. The vast majority of them are cynical cash grabs by movie studios who want lightning to strike twice without putting any work in at all. Rings is a perfect example as this, being the second sequel to the American remake of Japanese horror film 'Ring'.
It's a film that doesn't really work on any level and the ending is perhaps the most insulting part of all.
Here, the cursed videotape from the original is discovered once again by a college professor who, along with some of his students, are threatened by the malevolent spirit of Samara and try to cremate her corpse to end the curse.
The main issue with this film's ending is that it shows Samara's curse going viral online, an actually intriguing concept, before just deciding to end it there. Samara being born again by possessing one of the students also suggests that the movie was finally about to start playing with some fantastically inventive ideas.
The cynical conclusion you can draw is that these plot elements were deliberately left hanging in anticipation of Rings getting its own sequel. As of time of writing, that hasn't materialised, making the film's refusal to fully explore its most unique concepts all the more frustrating.
