Nicolas Cage was simply born to play Dracula, with the Face/Off star's over-the-top acting style lending itself perfectly to the legendary bloodsucker. As a result, you'd think his loyal fanbase would jump at the opportunity to see Cage portraying the Prince of Darkness in Chris McKay's Renfield.
The comedy-horror is far from perfect, but there's a lot to appreciate. By exploring Drac's relationship with Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), viewers get to see a personal side between the two iconic characters rarely conveyed before
With tight screenwriting, creative action, and plenty of heart, Renfield felt like a winner. Because it was released the same week as Mafia Mamma, Sweetwater, and Suzume, it looked like it didn't have much competition.
Sadly, Renfield finished fourth on its debut, behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Pope's Exorcist, and John Wick: Chapter 4. And when it dropped to eighth place in its second week, it was clear Renfield was doomed. Of its $65 million budget, it only banked $26 million, making Renfield a major flop.
