10 Horror Movies That Forced You To Answer Impossible Questions
1. Would You Be Willingly Drugged To Find Out What Happened To Your Missing Girlfriend? - The Vanishing
George Sluizer's masterful 1988 Dutch horror classic The Vanishing follows Rex (Gene Bervoets), whose girlfriend Saskia (Johanna ter Steege) disappeared from a rest stop three years prior.
Despite finding a new girlfriend, Rex is still haunted by and obsessed with finding out what happened to his former love. Later in the film Rex is confronted by the man responsible for her disappearance, Raymond (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu).
Raymond presents Rex with a drugged cup of coffee and explains that if he drinks it, he will find out what happened to Saskia by experiencing the same thing.
Though context-free common sense would say that you absolutely, positively do not accept the drink, put yourself in Rex's shoes: his entire life is at a standstill as he finds himself unable to move on from Saskia's disappearance. He is frozen in time, unable to truly live anyway.
Even though Raymond's entire everything makes it clear nothing good has happened to Saskia, the power of curiosity is crushing, and in Rex's case causes him to wake up buried alive underground.
It's easy to rage at Rex for basically sending himself to his own doom, but saying no to Raymond would probably be much harder than you think for someone in his shoes. The desire to have closure, even if at massive risk to oneself, would be overpowering.
