10 Horror Movies That Had No Right To Be This Good

4. School Of The Holy Beast

Strangers at night
Toei

There's trashy, and then there's Pinky Violence. This term refers to the filmmaking of Toei Company in the early '70s, when they created movies filled to the brim with sex, violence and exploitation. The subgenre ended up making a slew of films that were trashier than bin collection day.

So, take that and chuck in some nunsploitation on the side, and you've got yourself a three-course meal consisting of nothing but the most exploitative ingredients in horror, otherwise known as School of the Holy Beast. But, if you look past all that, what you'll get here is something with quite a lot to say.

The movie follows a young woman named Yumi who joins a church convent to uncover the secrets of her mother's death. But, whilst there, she falls victim to the higher-ups as the Sacred Heart Convent is run by lecherous, perverse and masochistic nuns/archbishops.

That description likely makes the movie sound like torture porn, and while there is a lot of torture - and enough nudity to make it feel close to porn - it's shot beautifully, tells a surprisingly rich story and has some fantastic acting. Alongside that, it's a compelling exploration of power dynamics and the corruption of the church.
