10 Horror Movies That Have Never Officially Been Released

9. David Cronenberg’s Frankenstein

The mind behind Shivers, Scanners, and Videodrome is the undisputed emperor of body horror. It's literally impossible to think about that genre without also thinking of the words "David Cronenberg". Go on, try it.

Cronenberg's credentials as a remaker of classic horror are rock solid thanks to his version of The Fly from 1986. However, there was almost another established name that bore his grotesque signature.

Shortly after The Fly's release, an ad was taken out in American magazine Variety promoting an upcoming Frankenstein movie directed by the Canadian maestro.

Sadly, this was as close as we ever got to the movie.

The ad was taken out way ahead of time and the script hadn't even been written yet, although the director has said in interviews that he wanted it to be a "reimagining" of the classic Mary Shelley story with an emphasis on the creature as an intelligent being rather than a lumbering beast.

The idea was solid, the team behind it looked incredible, and it would have had all the money in the world thrown at it. Unfortunately, the lightning never struck this picture, so nobody got the chance to say "It's alive!".
