H. P. Lovecraft is a complicated soul. On one hand, he created some of the most endearing horror fiction stories of all time and has an entire subgenre named after him.

On the other, he had some, shall we say, troubling opinions. Just look up the name of his cat. You'll understand when you read it.

Moving away from all that, let's focus on a tale of his called At the Mountains of Madness. It was originally published in 1936 and details a group of explorers and what they discover beneath the ice on a trip to Antarctica.

The story inspired a great many works after it, and was very nearly the basis of a film directed by Guillermo del Toro.

The Pan's Labyrinth creator teamed up with frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins to churn out a script for a Mountains of Madness movie in 2006. James Cameron was attached to produce and Tom Cruise to star, but the film hit various snags and has yet to see the light of day.

However, del Toro did say that Netflix picked the idea up for a series, so we may get to see this after all.
