10 Horror Movies That Judge You For Watching
7. Rubber
Horror films - or films in general, really - don't come much stranger than Quentin Dupieux's surreal satire Rubber, which centres around a sentient rubber tire that uses its telekinetic powers to kill people. Yup.
Rubber is in many ways a deconstruction of the slasher film itself, opening with a sequence in which a cop, Chad (Stephen Spinella), explains to the audience that the film is a homage to the "no reason principle," where things just...happen in films for no discernible reason.
Throughout the film, Dupieux cuts back to a crowd of spectators watching the rubber tire's gory rampage, clearly intended to be surrogates for the movie's audience - and moreover, horror fans - themselves.
The audience is shown to be finicky and difficult-to-placate throughout the film, leading to most of them being killed when they're fed poisoned turkey, seemingly sending-up the unhealthy gunk that most cinemas sell to their customers.
To top it all off, the film ends with the tire being reincarnated as a tricycle, serving as a commentary on Hollywood reboots and confirming the audience's complicity in such unimaginative business.
