10 Horror Movies That Keep Tricking Viewers

6. Coherence

It goes without saying, any story exploring quantum decoherence is going to be tricky to follow.

James Ward Byrkit's metaphysical drama starts simple enough, with a bunch of friends getting together for a dinner party. But when a passing comet triggers an anomaly in the multiverse (as they do), the ensemble begins to question all of reality.

Looking outside, they spot a duplicate of their house, suggesting their universe has merged with another. After they see their exact doubles through the window, it further implies two dimensions have fused into one, and when the group theorise at least one doppelgänger has infiltrated the house, it becomes impossible to tell if everyone is who they say they are.

Despite the zany premise, Coherence's sci-fi elements are understated, which helps maintain the mystery. On first viewing, it's hard to tell whether universes are collapsing into one another or there's a more rational explanation. But even when it's apparent what's really going on, Coherence still keeps everyone guessing, and every time it seems like the characters are wrapping their head around the situation, another piece of the puzzle pops up, challenging everything they thought they knew.

Even on repeated viewings, this cerebral mind-bender is sure to leave anyone scratching their head.
