10 Horror Movies That Pissed You Off Straight Away

9. Scream (1996)

Alien 3 Sigourney Weaver
Dimension Films

Wes Craven’s tongue-in-cheek love letter to the slasher subgenre, Scream, hit cinemas in the mid-‘90s and changed the horror film landscape forever, loading it up with meta action and dialogue, and intertextual references. We Join Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and friends at Woodsboro High, where a killer in a Munch-inspired, white Scream mask is stalking the student body.

Although the film was very well received at the time, has spawned going-on six sequels, and is regarded as a classic of the genre, that doesn’t mean it can’t piss us off. Intentionally seeking to screw with his audience, Craven killed his headline star, Drew Barrymore, in the film’s opening sequence.

Even if we weren’t there at the time, and hadn’t seen the posters and marketing materials which Barrymore featured prominently on, we still have the right to be pissed off. Right as we’re beginning to settle in and get to know Barrymore’s Casey Becker, she’s slaughtered and strung up from the tree in her front garden. No take-backsies, no resurrections, and no doubt now that anyone in this film can die. Irritating, but genius.
