10 Horror Movies That Purposefully Mess With Your Head
4. Triangle
Coming from Creep helmer Christopher Smith, Triangle is a seriously twisty sea-set time-loop slasher whose story is a lot more labyrinthine than say, Happy Death Day.
Starring a superb Melissa George as its beleaguered anti-heroine, the film follows her disastrous holiday with friends as a masked madman begins picking her mates off one-by-one on their luxury yacht.
However, repeat viewings of this trippy flick reveal that the above synopsis isn't quite right, as the film's climax reveals that the killer is our heroine herself. The infamous "it was the main character all along" twist is no corny, Shrooms style rug-pull this time, though.
Instead, in the case of this disturbing and surprisingly mature horror, the twist is used to underline the film's recurring theme of selective memory and its study of grief, guilt, and the tragedy of post-partum depression. As flashback gradually reveal the main character to be an abusive mother, she stops lying to herself and attempts to salvage what remains of her life, but it's an impossible ask that's doomed to eternal failure without any external support.
