The darkest film from Noah helmer Darren Aronofsky’s since his unbearably bleak (but also, not that deep) drug drama Requiem for a Dream, mother! is a movie which could charitably be called divisive.
This heavily symbolic horror sees Silver Linings Playbook Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence play a nameless, heavily pregnant women renovating her remote country home with her arrogant artist husband. A man and woman, referred to only by those terms, soon disturb her tranquil, and what follows is a rapid descent into calamity and eventual baby-killing madness.
It's a film which wants to be impenetrable, sure, but alas it's also one that is pretty easy to parse if you’ve got a passing familiarity with Christianity and ecological thought. Lawrence’s titular mother plays the besieged mother earth, whose beautiful baby is stolen and destroyed by Man and Woman, invited in by an arrogant God who wants to show off his creation...
It's not a subtle film, but if you're still unclear on the details, there are a pair of brothers played by the real-life Gleeson brothers who re-enact the story of Cain and Abel for your convenience.
