10 Horror Movies That Put Insane Effort Into Details Nobody Noticed
6. Se7en - John Doe's Notebooks
David Fincher's 1995 psychological thriller Se7en is considered one of the most influential movies of the last century and is still one of Fincher's most dissected films.
Despite this being one of his earlier works, Se7en has the tone of a director in full command of the creative process and the level of craftsmanship on display is evident of his turbulent experience from the production of Alien 3, a film plagued with constant rewrites and studio interference.
It's no wonder that Se7en, in response, is a precise, measured and immensely detailed piece of work, with clear creative control from the director himself. As the lead detectives Mills and Somerset follow an FBI lead, the killer is identified as 'John Doe,' the colloquial name usual given to unidentified corpses and what the detectives encounter reveals the depths of Doe's obsession with religious atonement for sin.
In Doe's apartment, Somerset discovers thousands of handwritten note books. He observes: "There are 2000 notebooks on these shelves and each notebook contains about 250 pages... no dates, placed on the shelves in no discernible order... "
Taking two months to complete and costing $15,000, the notebooks have a level of detail that verges on the obsessional. The moments where the books are on screen are seconds in length, with barely enough time to read more than a few words.
