10 Horror Movies That Put Insane Effort Into Details Nobody Noticed
4. Midsommar - The Number Nine
Ari Aster's Pagan occult thriller is a treasure trove of hidden details. After the death of her family at the hands of her suicidally depressed sister, Dani hijacks her partner's research holiday to Sweden, at the protests of his friends and peers.
Desperate for some catharsis and finding little to no sympathy from Christian, Dani becomes enthralled by the Pagan festivities, unaware that she has a bigger role to play in the celebration that will result in some of the most shocking Pagan occult scares since The Wicker Man.
Aster immerses the audience with detail, going as far as revealing the entire plot of the film in the first ten minutes on a mural, and the intricacies do not end there.
As Dani is lifted onto the pedestal after being crowed 'Queen,' a face can be seen in the trees surrounding the settlement - that of Dani's sister. What makes this more disturbing is that the face appears to be 'exhaling' the hedgerow - as she committed suicide by inhaling carbon monoxide.
The number nine extends throughout the film as well, reappearing throughout: the ritual extends over nine days, nine lives are sacrificed, the HÃ¥rga's life cycle is marked at the ages of 18, 36, 54 and 72, all multiples of nine. The festival is held every 90 years and even Dani's answer phone service counts to nine before cutting away.
If that's not enough, 'Midsommar' consists of nine letters.
