10 Horror Movies That Scrapped INSANE Kills
3. Nauls' Assimilation - The Thing
John Carpenter's The Thing is superbly crafted from top to bottom, though fans continually debate precisely what the hell happened to one of the film's characters who just dips out of the movie without any clear explanation.
We're talking of course about the Antarctic research station's cook Nauls (T. K. Carter), who deep into the third act wanders off and is just... never seen again.
It's reasonable to infer that Nauls was most likely killed by the hideous Blair-Thing, but it's never confirmed within the film itself.
There is actually a reason for this, though: the script did originally show Nauls being assimilated by the Thing, resulting in his explosively violent death.
Some storyboards from the planned sequence show that while the Blair-Thing was assimilating Nauls, tentacles would burst out of his body, ripping him apart as MacReady (Kurt Russell) helplessly watches.
It was sadly never filmed due to the time and budget costs required to execute such a detailed practical effects sequence, and so fans were instead left to just assume that the worst happened to Nauls.
