10 Horror Movies That Should've Scrapped Their Opening Scene

2. Evil Dead (2013)

Fede Álvarez strikes again, this time with his mostly very solid 2013 Evil Dead remake, which kicks off with a basically unrelated cold open in which a young girl is attacked in the woods by a group of apparent n'er-do-wells.

But it's of course soon enough revealed that said girl is in fact demonically possessed, just as her suffering father reluctantly sets her on fire and shoots her dead. Cue the opening title.

Is it a bad scene in of itself? Not really, but it just feels like a superfluous short film shoved into the front of the movie because somebody was anxious that audiences would get bored waiting a whole 20-or-so minutes for the real demonic shenanigans to get going.

Evil Dead Rise basically did the very same thing more recently, demonstrating a patent lack of belief in modern viewers' attention spans.
