10 Horror Movies That Should've Scrapped Their Opening Scene

3. Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity is an undeniably iconic horror film and a testament for the potential of low-budget genre offerings to strike a chord with the mainstream.

But even accepting its low-key, low-fi brand of scares, its opening sequence can't help but feel like it's desperately playing for time.

The found footage movie's first five minutes introduce us to doomed protagonists Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) in the most blandly generic manner possible, simply showing them going about their day and trading utterly forgettable dialogue.

You could argue that the aggressive normality of their dynamic is precisely what grounds the film in "reality" from the start, but there's very little here which would be missed were it just cut entirely.

Brevity is the soul of wit, and so cutting straight to the heart of the matter would've made for a more attention-grabbing, less-tedious opening.
