10 Horror Movies That Take Themselves Way Too Seriously

9. Plan 9 From Outer Space

Stating that 1959's Plan 9 from Outer Space takes itself too seriously is an understatement akin to stating that you might get a little warm if somebody dropped you into an active volcano.

Plan 9's eponymous plot is devised by extraterrestrials attempting to deter humanity from destroying the universe with scientific experimentation. This far-fetched scheme takes the form of resurrecting mankind's dead and unleashing them on civilization.

The end result is just as ludicrous as it sounds, a fact made harder to ignore by the rigid sincerity of the picture's tone. The acting on show is terrible and the stilted dialogue is even worse. However, Plan 9 from Outer Space is executed in such an earnest manner that it gives off the impression that production believe that they've created a seminal piece of cinema.

With all this being said, it's worth noting that the much maligned film eventually went on to attain cult classic status in the "so bad it's good" category. While its overall watchability may be debatable, the extent to which this outing takes itself too seriously is hammered home from its very first second.
