10 Horror Movies That Totally Confused You

6. The Third Part Of The Night

Second Run

Inspired by the director’s father’s time in Nazi-occupied Ukraine, That Part of the Night is a bit of a trip. The film follows protagonist Michal, who first has to watch as his mother, wife and son are murdered by the Gestapo.

Following this he joins the resistance, and in the time spent working in a research centre as a lice-feeder (which is exactly what it sounds like) his life descends into a surreal nightmare. He sees doppelgangers of his wife and son, speaks to fellow locals who answer cryptically, sees visions of the dead talking to him and encounters their corpses.

The dream-like, ever-changing telling of this story is underpinned by the real violence and horror of the Nazi occupation. It can be creepy and unsettling by virtue of its style, but also draws in elements of more ‘traditional’ horror by evoking history’s crimes.

It may be frustrating at times because the plot is hard to follow, but it’s a pretty effective movie regardless in that it creates one hell of an atmosphere.
