10 Horror Movies That Totally Confused You
7. Hereditary
This movie has been talked about to death on a lot of fronts, and that includes in terms of how confusing it is at times. One article in the Independent posited that the movie’s main problem was that general cinemagoers didn’t really get what they were watching, and that by the time the movie reached its insane ending, lots of people were already long-gone in terms of understanding (including myself on the first watch).
Littered throughout the film there are a million little hints, moments of foreshadowing or blink-and-you’ll-miss-it references to the actual story. This subtle approach helped make Ari Aster’s directorial feature debut one of the most celebrated horrors in modern years, but it also made a lot of the plot inaccessible to those of us who are chronically unobservant.
If you haven’t managed to keep up with events, the finale is the ultimate ‘f*ck you’ cherry on top: as a bunch of naked people gather in a treehouse to worship Alex Wolff and his in-film sister’s decapitated head. Like, what is that? When appreciated in all its detailed, slow-burning glory it is a masterclass in plot seeding, and stands up easily amongst the best horrors of the last decade. But good god, if it isn’t a hard slog to get there.
