10 Horror Movies That Totally Screwed Characters
8. Newt - Alien 3
Much like Halloween, the Alien franchise has had a peculiar habit of mistreating some of its most cherished characters.
Long before the resourceful, likeable Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) got an unceremonious off-screen offing in Alien: Covenant, though, there was the unforgivable off-screen demise of poor, young Newt (Carrie Henn) in David Fincher's deeply troubled Alien 3.
Newt was effectively the emotional lynch-pin of Aliens, serving as a surrogate daughter character to Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), whose own daughter died while she was in stasis.
Ripley's quest to keep Newt alive defined the bulk of the movie, and so having Alien 3 open with Newt dying in an escape pod crash landing felt like an insult to fans of the previous film. Aliens' writer-director James Cameron himself called the decision "a slap in the face."
That's not to ignore the death of Ripley's charming cohort Hicks (Michael Biehn) either, but if one of the two characters had to die, Newt absolutely would've been the one to survive, given the highly compelling nature of her relationship with Ripley.
Instead, she got bumped off like she was any random mook the audience didn't give a damn about. Terrible.
