10 Horror Movies That Tricked You By Killing The "Main Character" Early
8. Wolf Creek
The unmatched levels of merciless brutality used to dispatch what was seemingly a lead character warrant the unrelenting Wolf Creek's inclusion; bucking the trend of this list as the death occurs significantly later on in the film than many of the other inclusions.
2005's Australian horror sees friends Liz, Kristy and Ben backpacking across Australia. They are soon taken prisoner, and then hunted across the Australian outback by Mick Taylor, an unhinged serial murderer.
Liz is set up as the lead from the beginning and shows the signature badass streak of the main character in a horror; she initiates her escape with Kirsty from Taylor by shooting him with his own rifle. While Kirsty is utterly hysterical following her ordeal, Liz is forced to take the reigns and return to the psychopath's compound to secure a vehicle for their escape.
Liz shaping up so well as the main character, as well as an empowered horror heroine, makes the next sequence all the more shocking. She is ambushed by Taylor and butchered in agonizing fashion; the demented killer slashes off her fingers and severs her spine so he can interrogate her without her struggling. Fatally wounded, she dies before the abominable final act of the film even gets going.
