Maya Hawke has shot to fame with her exemplary performance as Robin Buckley on Netflix's flagship monster bonanza Stranger Things. As such, when fans learned that she had been cast in the first installment of the take on legendary horror writer R.L. Stine's Fear Street, one could be forgiven for assuming that Hawke would play a big part in the events to come.

Alas, Hawke's time as the focal point of Fear Street is cut brutally short. She portrays Heather Watkins, a bookstore employee at the aptly named Shadyside Mall; barely seconds into the introductory scene she is attacked by a masked killer. Despite managing to escape his initial assault, she eventually succumbs to his bloodthirsty attack, realizing in heartbreaking fashion that the masked killer is none other than her friend, Ryan Torres.

The shockingly savage manner of Heather's death is traumatizing enough, but the real shock to viewers came in killing off Hawke so early on in the film, considering that her star turn on Stranger Things arguably set her up as a perfect lead to carry this new franchise forward. Couple in the announcement of Sadie Sink's involvement in the sequel and a Hawkins gang reunion seemed on the cards. Damn it Ryan.
