10 Horror Movies That Turned Out Nothing Like You Were Expecting

If you're familiar with the work of Kevin Smith, then you'll probably know what you're getting into when whacking one of his movies on. Stoner humour? Yeah! Geeky references? Hell yeah! An appearance from Jay and Silent Bob? Oh, you'd better believe they'll be there! That's what makes Red State so unexpected, as it's not a single thing like any of his other movies.

Smith's Red State is a painfully realistic horror about a group of violent religious fundamentalists. It comes with scenes so shocking and deplorable that even stout horror fans will question whether they go too far. It's a good thing that Jay and Silent Bob avoided this one - yikes!

Naturally, this turn to gritty violence and brutal realism is so unexpected that you'd barely even know it came from this creator. If you go in blind, you'll be shocked when you see the Clerks director's name in the credits.

Kevin Smith made two more horror movies after this (Tusk and Yoga Hosers), both of which were more in keeping with his comedic style. Still, Red State proves that Jordan Peele isn't the only comedian who can produce terrifying horror movies.
