10 Horror Movies That Wasted Brilliant Concepts

6. Spiral: From The Book Of Saw

By the time a movie franchise reaches its ninth release, there is a real risk that fatigue had set in a long time ago. Particularly if you consider the highest-rated movie came 17 years earlier, and even that still has a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.

When Chris Rock picked up the Saw franchise, releasing a new movie for the first time since Jigsaw four years earlier, it came somewhat out of left field and had the potential to truly bring something new to the franchise.

The thought behind Spiral: From the Book of Saw was a Se7en-inspired thriller in which Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson hunt down a Jigsaw copycat targeting corrupt cops. What a premise, with the potential to tackle real-world policing issues. Unfortunately, however, this just didn’t even come close to living up to such potential.

The opportunity for any sort of real social commentary was wasted, the movie seemed to ignore that it was a part of one of the most iconic horror franchises in history in that it simply wasn’t scary, and it left far too much to be desired from what started as a great idea. Chris Rock could have transformed the entire franchise, but instead just added another tired movie to the pile.
