10 Horror Movies That Wasted Brilliant Concepts

4. Candyman

The Purge
Universal Pictures

1992’s Candyman is something of a cult classic in the realms of the horror genre, and like any popular movie, it was inevitable that it would see a remake, a reboot, or a sequel at some point. Described as a “spiritual sequel”, 2021’s Candyman almost ticks all three of these boxes.

Unfortunately however, the movie fell way below the standards of the original movie, while having the opportunity to say much more. The COVID-19 pandemic massively affected the entire world, including the movie industry, but Candyman could potentially have become even more important and relevant after its delay.

Originally scheduled to release in June 2020, but ultimately releasing in September 2021, Candyman’s themes of racism, inequality, and discrimination could have hit even harder in the wake of Summer 2020, but the movie ultimately missed the mark.

After Get Out tackled these same themes exceptionally, you would have been forgiven for expecting something with a similar power with Jordan Peele receiving a writing credit on Candyman. Unfortunately, however, the social commentary was handled so poorly, lazily, and generically, that the movie wasted an opportunity to put out a real message.
