2. Audition (1999)

Nowadays, most people find their significant other through the likes of Tinder, Bumble and Hinge. But, there are other, more traditional ways of doing it, such as meeting at a bar, reaching for the same item at the supermarket, or setting up a fake movie audition and screening women who could be your new wife.

Wait, what was that last one?

Audition follows a widowed man named Aoyama who is convinced by a friend to screen a group of women and date one of them. He takes a real liking to the mysterious Asami, a seemingly charming girl who is quiet, quaint and perfect for him. However, as their relationship develops, it becomes clear that there's some darkness hidden beneath her sweet exterior.

This movie is a terrifying exercise in building tension, as the more you learn about her, the more afraid of her you get. She's utterly unnerving, and the film's more metaphorical imagery (from the directing hand of Takashi Miike) highlights her tragic backstory and twisted mind.

The film's climax is completely scarring and highlights how dangerous it can be to bring a stranger into your life. So, don't set up a creepy/dishonest audition for a new girlfriend; lesson learned.
