In 1963, filmmaker extraordinaire Alfred Hitchcock accomplished what Birdemic: Shock And Awe failed to replicate over half a century later: make birds scary.

Loosely based on the story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, this monster movie classic stars Tippi Hedren as Melanie, a San Fransiscan socialite who travels to Bodega Bay in pursuit of a potential new flame. However, not long after she arrives in the small town, birds begin to attack.

As Melanie decides to spend more time in town, the attacks become increasingly violent until the area is besieged by the feathery fiends.

What makes The Birds especially fascinating is that it offers no solid explanation for what causes the animals to attack, which has led to a handful of interpretations over the years.

Some have attributed the birds as an allegory for female sexuality - the townsfolk disapprove of Melanie's promiscuous reputation and the animals don't attack until she arrives there - while others have read the violence as a metaphor for the emerging fears surrounding the Cold War.

However, The Birds is likewise a chilling vision of what could happen if nature ever decided to suddenly turn against an unprepared human race
