Whereas M. Night Shyamalan famously failed to make plants scary in eco horror The Happening, director Carter Smith did so spectacularly in his cinematic adaptation of The Ruins.

Based on the novel of the same name by Scott B. Smith (who also penned the screenplay), this early-2000s flick follows a group of American tourists venture to a Myan temple hidden deep within the jungle when they're invited by another tourist hoping to find his brother at an archaeological dig.

However, the group's spontaneous adventure quickly descends into a visceral nightmare when the locals force them to the top of the temple after one of them accidentally steps in the vines which cover the area.

As the tourists' situation grows exponentially more desperate, they discover these vines are carnivorous - and possibly even sentient.

Moreover, the plant's ability to mimic any sound brings some psychological terror to the table too. Before slowly enveloping and consuming its prey, the vines appear to take pleasure in toying with the group first.

What follows is a horror experience that's both suffocatingly bleak and harrowingly violent. Whether or not the vines are an evolutionary phenomenon or something more sinister, viewers will never trust plants again.
