10 Horror Movies That Will Make You Never Sleep Again

9. Donnie Darko

Deadly Blessing 1981
Pandora Cinema/Newmarket Films

The ongoing joke is that nobody knows what Donnie Darko is about, not even Jake Gyllenhaal despite playing the main role. Really though, that’s part of its charm: it’s so off putting and disorientating, and that’s what makes it so good.

The film follows the titular Donnie, a teenage boy prone to sleepwalking. Most of us would be freaked out enough if we woke up having sleep-walked into the middle of the road, never mind if we were then greeted by a horrible rabbit-suited man threatening the end of the world.

A weird mix of dreams, reality, visions and hallucinations, the film really does keep you on your toes. With the threat of the impending apocalypse being thrust upon you when sleeping or awake, there really is no time to feel safe.

Besides, sleepwalking is scary enough by itself when you’re looking at the possibility you might (like Donnie) one day wake up half naked on a golf course.
