10 Horror Movies That Will Make You Terrified Of Children

8. Rosemary's Baby (1968)

Village Of The Damned
Paramount Pictures

Also based on a novel, Rosemary’s Baby is a psychological horror released in 1968, directed by Roman Polanski and starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes. In the film, Rosemary Woodhouse (Farrow) is forced to conceive the son of the devil after her husband (Cassavetes) forms a satanic pact with a religious cult. Oblivious, Rosemary experiences a succession of strange occurrences, before finally giving birth to the antichrist itself.

In the closing moments of the film, Rosemary is forced to accept her monstrous infant, cementing her bond to the child, and resigning herself to the task of motherhood. In a strange way, the moment itself is depicted almost positively, but there’s a much darker undercurrent: the baby itself is horrendous, and the implications of its conception are numerous, and potentially devastating. But, isn’t that just childbirth in a nutshell? No? Just me?

Verdict: Rosemary’s Baby is a surprisingly terrifying experience that completely holds up, even forty years after it was released. In 2016, the film is still fully capable of making you absolutely terrified of a harmless infant, as well as the prospect of pregnancy. If you’re expecting, you might consider giving this one a miss, unless you’re also a masochist.
