10 Horror Movies & TV Shows You Can No Longer Watch
5. The Devils
Surely the most high-profile film on this list is Ken Russell's 1971 historical drama The Devils, which while not marketed as a horror film upon initial release absolutely fits the bill by contemporary metrics.
Russell's highly controversial film about a 17th-century Roman Catholic priest being accused of witchcraft received an X rating in the UK for its graphic depictions of sex and violence, and was banned in numerous countries.
Despite receiving a major release from Warner Bros. and grossing $11 million worldwide, though, home video releases have been frustratingly spare over the years.
The last official disc release was a 2012 UK DVD, but Warner Bros. would only allow the theatrical cut to be issued, with the famed director's cut remaining trapped in limbo.
No version of The Devils has ever been officially released on Blu-ray, and though the theatrical cut was briefly available on streaming services Shudder and the Criterion Channel in recent years, it's since been removed from both.
Given that Warner Bros. allegedly denied requests to produce a Blu-ray run as recently as a few years ago, it's been rumoured that the studio doesn't want to touch the film due to its contentious religious subject matter.
